NEWARK, Del. – Senior Kelsey Buchanan (South Riding, Va.) picked up a double double of 24 points and 11 rebounds Friday evening as the University of Delaware women’s basketball team reached its 200th all-time victory at the Bob Carpenter Center following a 65-44 win over UNCW.

Buchanan (below left)  went 7-for-13 (.538) from the field in addition to 10 free throws, two blocks, two assists and a steal for the Blue Hens, who won their third game out of the last four contests to improve to 11-4 overall and 3-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association.

Classmate Akeema Richards (Baltimore, Md.) added 14 points and a team-best four assists for Delaware.  Freshman guard Erika Brown (Haledon, N.J.) collected nine points and a career-high 10 rebounds and tied a career-best three steals.

The Hens and Seahawks (1-16, 0-3 CAA) battled things out in the first half, with UNCW leading the majority of the stanza and going up by as much as 11 at the 11:48 mark.  Delaware responded with a 17-0 run to take the 22-16 lead with just over two minutes remaining.

UD took a two-point advantage into halftime and went up by four to open the second half before UNCW tied the game at 28-28 with 15:18 on the clock.  Freshmen Shanice Johnson (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Hannah Jardine (St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada) each tallied baskets within the next minute and the Hens never looked back in the win.

Delaware closed out the game with a 19-4 stretch, with UNCW’s lone points coming on free throws.  The Hens held the Seahawks without a field goal for the final 6:46 of the contest.

UNCW was led by Kelva Atkins’ 11 points and five assists while Brie Mobley and Amber Reeves each contributed eight points apiece.  Naqaiyyah Teague collected a team-best eight rebounds in the loss.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Tina Martin
On the win over UNCW - “Overall, it was a very good effort in the second half. This young group has to learn to have that resiliency and this was the first step. We definitely went down 16-5 and I thought there was some hangover [from the JMU game] and we started missing lay-ups. Defensively, we were standing around. In the second half, we went on that big run and then, we calmed down. We have to just keep grinding away and plugging away. This was a good bounce back game for us.”

On the play of senior Akeema Richards - “I thought she played very well tonight. I thought she gave us a big lift and played under control. Akeema has to be the senior and has to play under control. I was proud of her tonight. I really thought she played a really good floor game. It was good to see the senior calm us down.”

Senior tri-captain Kelsey Buchanan
On having a bit of a hangover from the JMU game - “I was a little concerned. We seemed a little flat and a little dead. We needed to get that energy and momentum and we seemed to get it.”

On keys to the comeback victory - “It was Akeema [Richards]. She hit a couple of big shots for us in the second half. Her play got us going and we knew we could do it.”

On being one of the leaders of the team – “It’s pretty important, especially with the younger players. There are a lot of freshmen [on the team] and they are asked to play and be an important part of the team. We have to be an important part of that process.”

Senior tri-captain Akeema Richards
On the turnaround – “Our defense turned things around for us. Once we started getting defensive stops, it just turned the game into something we could contend with.”
On her performance against UNC Wilmington – “I was just playing ball. I just come in and do whatever the coaches ask me to do.”
