Welcome to the first installment of This is How I Train.

Every Tuesday and Thursday during the preseason, we will feature a member of the Blue Hen football team and learn a little more about what motivates them to excel.

CHARLES BELL
Senior • Linebacker • Conestoga, Pa. (Penn Manor HS) • Sport Management

A fourth-year member of the squad, Bell will be a third-year starter at linebacker and become one of the few student-athletes in Delaware football history to serve as a team co-captain multiple years. One of the top linebackers in both the Colonial Athletic Association and at the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision level, Bell has twice earned All-CAA honors and last year added All-East honors to his ledger. He has led the team in tackles each of the past two seasons and his 217 career stops rank No. 17 among active FCS players and leaves him just 83 shy of becoming the 19th player in UD history to reach 300 for a career.

Three Words that Best Describe Me: Outgoing, Funny, Hard-working

What Makes a Good Captain: "To me, a good captain is someone who can lead whether it be by example or by someone who is vocal. A good captain does the right thing everyday, comes to practice and is the same person everyday, works hard, and never takes a day off."

Goals for the Season: "We definitely want to win the CAA and make the playoffs. That's been our goal since Day 1 when Coach Rocco came on board. For me, I just want to be the best player, the best leader, and the best captain that I can be for the team and to help us achieve those same goals. Success will mean that we met those goals. Anything below that and we won't be happy."

Favorite Thing About Working Out: "For me, being around my friends that I've known for the last three years, working hard, and getting better every day is what I enjoy the most."

In the Weight Room: "My favorite is the bench press, because that's what I'm best at. I've lifted 405 (pounds) and that's one of the best on the team. I just hope to keep getting better."

Favorite Practice Drill: "When the team goes head to head, offense vs. defense. It's fun, it's competitive, and really gets the tempo going in practice."

Best Part of Preseason: "(He laughs) Getting in the ice tubs after practice. After you've been out there in the 95-degree heat, working hard, and sweating, just getting in there feels really good."

On Inside Linebackers Coach Manny Rojas: "He has such great energy. He's always upbeat, always outgoing, and always positive. He is just a great coach all around. We are focused, but when it's time to have fun, we have fun."
