FAIRFAX STATION, Va. -- The University of Delaware women’s rowing team placed fifth for the third straight year Sunday morning as the Blue Hens closed out the 2013 season at the Colonial Athletic Association Championsips on the Occoquan River at Sandy Run Regional Park.

Delaware crews placed fifth in the Varsity Eights competition and sixth in both the Varsity Fours and Second Varsity Eights races to earn nine points and tie for fifth place in the six-team field.

Boston University captured its first-ever CAA title with 32 points, edging two-time defending champion Northeastern by just three points. Buffalo was third with 27 points followed by Drexel (20), Delaware (9), and Eastern Michigan (9).

The meet closed out the 2013 season for Delaware under first-year head coach Kevin Gruber.

The CAA also announced its 2013 all-conference team Sunday and University of Delaware senior co-captain Bethany Callaway (at right) from Seaford, Del. (Sussex Tech High School) led the way. Callaway becomes the fourth Blue Hen in school history earn All-CAA honors.

She was joined on the team by K.C. Anderson of Eastern Michigan, Alexa Antonioli and Mollie Cusack of Drexel, Deborah Garth and Rosa Kemp of Buffalo, Amanda Brem, Katherine Halbig, and Justine Lowe of Northeastern, and Gabby Cutler, Caroline Kimberly, Lynn Ratte, and Caitlin Trillo of Boston University.

The Delaware Varsity Eights squad improved one place from last year’s sixth place finish as the crew posted a time of 6:53.0 to trail winner Boston University with a time of 6:33.3. Northeastern was second followed by Buffalo, Drexel, Delaware, and Eastern Michigan.

Delaware’s crew consisted of coxswain Hayley Diverio, Holly Dodge, Sarah Slotoroff, Jennifer Kohler, Catherine Manner, Bethany Porter, Calla Cissel, Bethany Callaway, and Alexandra Smart.

In the Varsity Fours race, Delaware’s contingent of coxswain Molly Gardner, Angela Quinn, Danielle Lawler, Kaitlin Flood, and Shannon Bell placed sixth with a time of 8:07.6. Northeastern won the race in 7:27.9 followed by Drexel, Boston University, Buffalo, Eastern Michigan, and Delaware.

In the Second Varsity Eights competition, Delaware’s team of coxswain Jamie Noce, Denise Cirelli, Jennifer Majcher, Shannon Taylor, Ally Crossman, Alexandra Cruz, Corey Holloway, Meredith Murphy, and Lily Guttentag posted a sixth place showing with a time of 7:16.1. Buffalo won the race in a time of 6:43.5 followed by Boston University, Northeastern, Drexel, Eastern Michigan, and Delaware.
