Club Sailing

Spirit of the Game

"There is nothing-absolutely nothing-half so much worth doing as simply messing around in boats"

The University of Delaware Sailing Team is a club sport open to anyone who has an interest in sailing. The purpose of the team is to direct its efforts to encourage, advance and improve yacht racing and the sport of sailing, in all of its phases. With a fleet of Flying Juniors, Club 420s, a Laser, a Hobie Cat, and an O'Day, we have the boat you need.

Beginners are welcome! We will teach you the basics of sailing, racing rules and on-the-water etiquette.

Racers are welcome! We participate in MAISA and attend many different regattas up and down the eastern sea-board.

Organizational Meeting(s)

Meetings are twice monthly.

The Sailing Club at University of Delaware - SCUD- is a co-ed sailing club open to all full-time UD students.

Practice Information

During the season we meet everyday at 3:00 in the Morris Library parking lot. We try to leave school around 3:15 or 3:30 and we sail until it gets dark.

We sail on the Bohemia River in Maryland out of Two Rivers Yacht Basin. Travel time to/from the marina is about 40 minutes and transportation to practice is provided by other members.

National and/or Regional Affiliation

Member of the MAISA (Middle Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association)

Membership Requirements

Attendance is not mandatory - we encourage people to sail as often as they wish. Those who attend regattas on weekends will be chosen based on effort and participation as demonstrated in practices.

All members of the University of Delaware Sailing Team will have to pass a swim test of 5 minutes treading water with shoes on, as well as swimming a distance of 50 meters.

Equipment Required

Life jackets will be provided to all sailors. We recommend you come dressed in appropriate clothing for sailing (clothes and shoes that can get wet, & a change of clothes, etc.) and dress according to the weather (pants, sweatshirts, rain-gear when cold and bathing suits when warmer!)
