Dorothy Safron (Women's Tennis) Earns National 5 & 10 Athlete of The Week Honors

NEWARK, Del. (April 14, 2014) -- University of Delaware women’s tennis senior Dorothy Safron is the National 5 & 10 Athlete of the Week for April 14.

Safron, who is from New York, NY (Professional Children’s School), went 2-0 in both doubles and singles play as Delaware wrapped up their regular seasons with 5-2 wins over CAA opponents Towson and Drexel.

Succeeding as a team is very fulfilling,” said Safron, “I think our recent success is extremely motivating to all of us, and will give us momentum as we head into the CAAs.”

At Towson Safron and her partner Carmen Lai defeated Nani Lizana and Ariel Burke at No. 1 doubles 8-6.  She won her No. 2 singles contest against Ayana Dow with a score of 6-2, 6-1.

Safron and Lai claimed a No. 1 doubles victory again at Drexel against Zeynep Mafa and Marcela Rosales with an 8-3 win, and then a No. 2 singles victory with a 6-2, 6-2 score.

“It feels great to end the season playing well and feeling good about my game,” the senior said, “Ending my tennis career at Delaware is definitely a surreal feeling for me. I don't think it has fully hit me yet that I won't be returning in the fall to continue my tennis career as a Blue Hen.”

Safron is No. 3 all-time in Delaware history with 72-40 singles wins, including 14-9 on the season.  She is No.7 in all-time doubles wins with 64-40 and she and Lai are 16-9 this season.

Overall the women’s tennis team is 8-7 this season with an in-conference record of 3-2.The team begins CAA tournament play on Friday, April 18 at William & Mary.

As a team I know we are all confident that we are capable of something great,” said Safron. “My goal for the CAA Tournament this year is to leave my heart out on the court and give it everything I've got.”
