Blue Hen Volleyball Team Plays Final Non-Conference Matches This Weekend at Clemson Classic

CLEMSON, S.C. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team will play its final non-conference matches of the 2013 season this weekend when the Blue Hens participate in the Clemson Classic.

Delaware, which is 6-5 on the season, opens the invitational on Friday by facing Troy at 4:30 p.m. in Jervey Gym. The Blue Hens will then take on Alabama at 10 a.m. on Saturday, before facing the host Tigers at 7 p.m. that night in the tournament’s final match.

UD sophomore Katie Hillman is leading the Blue Hens with 139 kills and 3.23 kills per set, while her kills average is tied for third in the Colonial Athletic Association. Senior Katie Hank ranks second on the squad and ninth in the league by averaging 2.70 kills per set, while redshirt sophomore Chandler Bryant’s .267 attack percentage is the seventh highest in the conference.

Sophomore Mackenzie Olsen currently leads the CAA with 9.72 assists per set, while fellow sophomore Ariel Shonk ranks second in the league with 5.60 digs per set.

Troy enters the weekend with a 5-6 record, following its three-set victory over Alabama State on Tuesday. Marija Zelenovic leads the Trojans with 140 kills on the season, while Alexandra Alexander has posted 319 assists. Courtney Cohen is pacing the squad with 188 digs, with Kiah Cheatham has made a team-high 38 blocks.

Alabama carries an 8-2 overall record and a six-match winning streak into the invitational, as the Crimson Tide captured its own Hampton Inn Bama Bash last weekend. Laura Steinis has posted a team-best 122 kills so far this season, while Krystal Rivers is right behind her with 120 kills. Sierra Wilson has handed out 372 assists for Alabama, while Kryssi Daniels leads the Crimson Tide with 99 digs.

Clemson is 5-3 on the young season, and will be hosting its second tournament of the year. Moneshia Simmons is leading the Tigers with 135 kills this season, wile Hannah Brenner has dished out a team-high 272 assists. Kristin Faust has made 121 digs for the Tigers, while Karis Wilson and Beta Dumancic each have surpassed the 30-block total.

The Blue Hens are 0-1 all-time against Alabama and Clemson, falling to the Crimson Tide in 1977 and to the Tigers in 1983. Friday’s match will be the first ever contest between Delaware and Troy.
