NEWARK, Del. – Off to their best start since the 2007 season, the University of Delaware field hockey team travels to #14 Penn State (Friday, 5 p.m.) and Bucknell (Sunday, noon).

The #16 Blue Hens received their first appearance in the NFHCA National Coaches Poll this past week for the first time since 2009 when they ranked as high as 11th.

Delaware looks to continue its hot streak after opening the year with a 5-1 record, the best mark since the Hens went 7-0 in 2007.

  • Delaware has won four straight games, including a shutout over then #11 Temple.
  • The four-game winning streak is the longest since the 2009 campaign when the Hens picked up nine consecutive victories.
  • Sophomore Michaela Patzner (Rosenheim, Germany) and redshirt freshman Maddie O’Beirne (Vienna, Va.) garnered CAA weekly honors for the first time in their careers.
  • Patzner was named the Co-Player of the Week after collecting three goals over two games.  She currently leads the team with seven goals and 16 points through six games played.  Additionally, Patzner leads the CAA with an average of 2.67 points (eighth NCAA), 1.17 goals per game (ninth NCAA) and two game-winning goals.
  • O’Beirne picked up Rookie of the Week honors after scoring two goals against the Spartans on Sunday.  She is second on the team with three goals for seven points.
  • Dating to last season, Patzner has scored at least one point in the last seven games.  Additionally, she has scored at least one goal in six of the last seven contests.
  • Patzner has 14 career goals, tied for second on the team behind Kelsey McKee (20) and Kasey Prettyman (14).
  • Senior Heather Hartman leads the Hens with 12 career assists, good for 20th in UD history.
  • Senior Sarah Scher has started 11 consecutive games for Delaware (dating to last year) and has collected 26 saves while allowing just eight goals in 423:05 minutes of play this season.  She leads the CAA with a 1.31 goals against average (18th NCAA) and save percentage of .765 (22nd NCAA).
  • Sophomore Jacki Coveleski ranks third in the CAA with 0.50 assists per contest.
  • Penn State holds a 14-5-2 advantage over Delaware all-time.  The two teams have not matched up since the 1991 season and the Nittany Lions have won four straight games against the Hens.
  • Delaware leads Bucknell in the all-time series by a mark of 8-2-2.  The Hens won the last game between the two teams, 4-2, in 2007 at Rullo Stadium.

The 12th-ranked Nittany Lions are currently 3-3 on the year and most recently knocked off defending national champion Princeton, 4-3, to snap the Tigers’ 17-game winning streak.  Taylor Herold leads the team offensively, posting four goals and two assists for 10 total points.  Brittany Grzywacz, the reigning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, is tied for second on the team with three goals.  Kylie Licata has seen all of the team’s minutes in goal, collecting 26 saves with a 2.49 goals allowed average in six games.

Bucknell is also 3-3 this season and defeated Penn, 2-1, in its last contest.  The Bison were the only team to place three student-athletes on the Preseason All-Patriot League Team in seniors Rachel Misko and Erica Perrine alongside junior Kelsey Mucelli.  Perrine leads the team in the net with 20 saves and a 1.64 goals allowed average in six games.  Senior Leigh Hillman is first for the Bison with four goals while Kiersten Sydnor has posted two.
