NEWARK, Del. – Coming off of its most successful campaign in recent years, the University of Delaware women’s lacrosse team announced the 2013 fall schedule, which includes seven ranked opponents from last season.

“My philosophy is to be the best, you have to play and beat the best,” stated head coach Kateri Linville, who is in her fourth season with the Blue Hens.  “We have put together a tough fall ball schedule in order to prepare for a challenging spring schedule.

Delaware will kick off the fall slate with its third annual Blue vs. Gold scrimmage, held this Saturday at 10:30 a.m. on the Delaware Practice Fields.

“Our intersquad scrimmage is a great way to start our competitive season,” commented Linville.  “We always invite our alumni back, give the first pre-game speech of the year and encourage our parents to join us for our first tailgate of the season.  We know that in order to play our best on game days, we have to play our best against each other every day.”

The Hens will face a different colored jersey for the first time on Oct. 5 as Delaware hosts Richmond at 2 p.m., also on the Delaware Practice Field.

Earlier in the day, the team will participate in the 2013 Walk to End Alzheimer’s Harford County Walk in honor of Karen Drost, mother of Corrine Drost (captain ’11; assistant coach ’12), and all who continue to battle against the horrific disease.

“We really look forward to joining our families, friends and alumni for this walk and hope they can return to campus with us to watch our first official fall ball game,” Linville remarked.

Delaware will travel on October 12 to Annapolis, Md. for the Navy Play Day for tough contests against Syracuse, Stanford, Denver and Colorado.  The teams finished third, 14th and 16th, respectively, in the final IWLCA Division I Poll.

On October 13, the Hens will host #12 Notre Dame at St. Paul’s School for Girls in Brooklandville, Md.

“We are excited to host Notre Dame at St. Paul’s School for Girls as Delaware has had several standout players come from there, including one of our freshmen this year, Shelby Wells, as well as our 2012 captain, Grace Wills,” said Linville.

The following weekend, UD will travel to Bethlehem, Pa. for an 11 a.m. match against Lehigh before returning home Oct. 26 to host the Delaware Play Day.

Competition will be at a high level at the Play Day as #6 Penn State, #9 Georgetown, #17 Penn and Johns Hopkins will all be in attendance.

“We are thrilled to host these four talented teams and look forward to having our alumni, parents and fans come to Delaware for our last fall ball event,” Linville exclaimed.

The Hens, who finished 10-6 overall in 2013, lost just one letterwinner to graduation for the 2014 season and return IWLCA All-Mid-Atlantic Region and All-CAA First Team selection Caitlin McCartney.
