University of Delaware Football Cracks Top 25, Moves Up in Sports Network, Coaches Polls (Sept. 30, 2013)
NEWARK, Del. -- Thanks to a two-game win streak, including a big 29-22 victory over then No. 14 ranked James Madison in the Colonial Athletic Association opener Saturday night at Delaware Stadium, the University of Delaware football squad cracked the national Top 25 polls announced Monday.
The Blue Hens (4-1), who had been receiving votes in both The Sports Network and the FCS Coaches polls each week this season, gained a pair of national rankings as they moved up to No. 24 in The Sports Network and No. 25 in the FCS Coaches polls.
The Top 25 rankings are the first for the Blue Hens since being ranked No. 23 by TSN and No. 20 by the FCS Coaches in the Oct. 29 poll last season. Delaware has now earned a Top 25 ranking at some point in the season every year since 1991.
Delaware will take on its second straight Top 25 opponent this week as the Blue Hens head to Orono, Maine to take on the #23/23 ranked Black Bears at 3:30 p.m. at Alfond Stadium. Maine is coming off a 28-21 upset win over then No. 20 Richmond Saturday in Richmond, Va.
Delaware and Maine are among nine teams earning Top 25 votes this week, joining No. 3 Towson, No. 19 New Hampshire, No. 20 Villanova, and vote-getters James Madison, William & Mary, Richmond, and Stony Brook in The Sports Network poll and No. 2 Towson, No. 18 New Hampshire, No. 20 Villanova, and No. 21 James Madison in the FCS Coaches poll.
