NEWARK, Del. --  University of Delaware student-athletes made another significant contribution to the community this past weekend as the Blue Hen women’s cross country and track & field squad’s inaugural Shoe Drive was a big success.

Members of the team asked all Blue Hens fans and members of the community to donate gently used athletic shoes and soccer shoes that would be distributed to the MORE Foundation, an organization that changes the lives of others in Africa. The shoes are sold in major metropolitan areas to vendors who in turn create jobs and help improve the quality of life in cities. The vast majority of Africans cannot afford new shoes. The proceeds from the sale of the shoes provides training and tools to the poorest rural farmers.

Seven different drop-off sites were set up around campus during the weekend, including locations at Delaware Stadium as part of the Blue Hens’ Homecoming game vs. Albany.  Over 300 pairs of athletic shoes were collected throughout campus.

“I was very pleased with our team’s effort in conducting this event,” said UD women’s cross country and track & field head coach Wendy McFarlane. “Thanks to everyone on campus and the Delaware community for supporting our efforts. Our team is honored to provide these shoes to the MORE Foundation Groups, a foundation that helps better the lives of people in Africa.”

“The shoe drive was a great opportunity for us to work together as a team to collect shoes to send to people in need,” said UD cross country and track & field co-captain Michele Lambert, a senior political science major from Eldersburg, Md. (Liberty HS). “We worked with the UD community to get the word out and we collected a lot of shoes. Community service is really important to our team. We are grateful for the resources that we have, and we all thought it was important to take time to give back to others.”
