Blue Hens Volunteer for Girls on the Run Organization
NEWARK, Del. – Last week, members of the University of Delaware women’s soccer team volunteered for the Girls on the Run Organization of Delaware at its bi-annual 5k race.
The mission of the nationwide Girls on the Run Organization is to inspire girls to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum, which creatively integrates running.
The Girls on the Run Organization strives to express joy, optimism, and gratitude through words, thoughts, and actions while nurturing physical, emotional, and spiritual health.
The Blue Hen women’s soccer program volunteered at the race in Milford, Del on Nov. 23. The players worked as course marshals throughout the event and supported runners as they participated. The team made signs of encouragement for those who participated and cheered on the runners and their “buddies.”
In Delaware, GOTR is a 12-week after-school program that is used to promote and inspire young girls. At the end of each Spring and Fall Season, there is a 5k event in Southern and Northern Delaware. The Southern event takes place in Milford and the Northern event takes place on the Waterfront in Wilmington.
"We had a great time being a part of the GOTR 5K in Milford,” said Delaware assistant coach Nitan Soni. “This was more than just any community outreach for us, it is a fantastic platform for our players to fulfill their social responsibility as positive role models and directly support our community. The GOTR program provides hundreds of young girls throughout the state with inspiration, confidence, and friendships and to be a part of that process was a privilege. We hope in turn that our players were inspired by the courage and perseverance they saw on Saturday and we look forward to making this a team tradition.”
