NEWARK, Del. – Freshman Guillermo Delgado of University of Delaware men’s soccer continues to bring home more post-season honors, this time the forward has earned National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA)/Continental Tire All-American honors.

Delgado earned second team All-American honors, becoming just the seventh player, and the only freshman, in Delaware history to receive the prominent award. The last Blue Hen to earn All-American honors was Evans Frimpong in 2011. Frimpong was also a second team selection.

The forward was the only freshman named to the first or second All-American teams, and was one of just two freshmen to be honored nationally in 2013. Delgado was also the only All-American selection from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA).

“Guillermo is our second All-American in three years,” said Delaware head coach Ian Hennessy. “Like Evans Frimpong, he is a forward who has been successful in a program that encourages attacking play.”

This past season, Delgado set new Delaware program records for goals (15) and points (35) by a freshman in a single season along with the record for consecutive games scoring a goal (5). Earlier in the month of December, Delgado was named to the NSCAA All-South Atlantic Region first team, becoming the 10th player in Blue Hen history to earn a regional first team award.

In November, Delgado was named CAA Rookie of the Year and was an All-CAA first team and All-Rookie Team selection. The freshman finished the 2013 season leading the Blue Hens and CAA in goals, points and game-winning goals. On the national scene, Delgado is the only freshman who ranks in the NCAA top-five in goals and points.

The Tres Cantos, Spain native led Delaware to its best record in program history in 2013 as the Blue Hens totaled 14 wins and made its second NCAA Tournament appearance in the past three years. The forward’s 35-point season ties him for second all-time in the Delaware record books for points in a single season while his 15-goal  rookie campaign ranks him fourth all-time in Blue Hen men’s soccer history for goals scored in a season.

“Hopefully, Guillermo can continue to flourish, and like Evans, continue on into the professional ranks of the MLS, in which he aspires to play,” said Hennessy.
