RICHMOND, Va. – Former University of Delaware women’s basketball standout Elena Delle Donne was named Monday as the Colonial Athletic Association Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year.
The conference selected a Scholar-Athlete of the Year in each of its 22 championship sports this season with each winner earning a spot on the ballot for the Male and Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. All of the winners were a starter or important reserve on their team and had a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or higher.
Eight of the ballot’s finalists earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America accolades this past season while 15 received all-conference honors in their respective sports.
Delle Donne is only the second repeat winner of the CAA Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. She joins former James Madison field hockey star Kelsey Cutchins (2008-09; 2009-10) to win back-to-back honors.
The forward, who majored in human services, became just the fourth person in history to be honored as the Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-American of the Year in women’s basketball for two straight seasons. She was a four-time member of the CAA All-Academic First Team while being a consensus First Team All-America selection for the second year in a row.
Delle Donne received the Honda Award as the National Player of the Year in women’s basketball and was a finalist for numerous other national Player of the Year awards. She earned CAA Player of the Year honors for the third time after ranking second in the nation in scoring with 26.0 points per game.
The Wilmington, Del. native finished her career fifth in NCAA history with 3,039 all-time points and holds CAA records in points, field goals, free throws and blocked shots. She also owns 10 University of Delaware career records as well as numerous season and single game standards.
Delle Donne led Delaware to its second CAA Championship and to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the first time in school history.
Delle Donne was the second overall pick in April’s WNBA Draft by the Chicago Sky and was chosen as June’s WNBA Rookie of the Month.
