RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Delaware baseball team was honored by the Colonial Athletic Association Monday as Blue Hens starting pitcher Matt Soren (at right) was named the CAA Tri-Pitcher of the Week for his performance last week.

Soren, a senior right-handed pitcher from Roslyn, N.Y. (Roslyn), allowed three hits over 8.0 shutout innings and struck out a career-high 15 batters in Delaware’s 2-0 win over La Salle last Saturday.  He had at least one strikeout in all eight innings pitched and struck out the side in the first, fourth and seventh innings.

The 15 strikeouts Soren collected were the most by a UD pitcher since Jason Rogers, who punched out 15 Hofstra batters on May 4, 2002, at Bob Hannah Stadium.

Soren is the first pitcher to garner CAA’s weekly honor this year and joins Jimmy Yezzo, who won CAA Co-Player of the Week on Mar. 25, as the only Blue Hens to earn weekly conference honors this season.

For the season, Soren owns a 4-3 record with a team-best 2.51 earned run average among starters. He has pitched 68 innings this season and struck out a team-high 73 batters.

Joining Soren as Tri-Pitcher of the Week is Northeastern’s Nick Berger and George Mason’s Anthony Montefusco.  William & Mary first baseman Michael Katz was named Player of the Week and William & Mary’s Ryan Hissey was named Rookie of the Week.

Delaware (30-17) makes its final CAA road trip of the season on Friday, May 10, at 3:00 p.m., when the Blue Hens travel to Boston, Mass. to play Northeastern University for a three-game weekend series.
