FARMVILLE, Va. -- The University of Delaware softball team posted a 5-2 win over Delaware State before dropping an 8-4 decision to the host Lancers Sunday afternoon at the Longwood Invitational.
In the Blue Hens’ first game of the day, Delaware (6-10) opened the scoring by pushing across two runs in the top of the first inning. One out later Shelby Jones singled to left, chasing home Bencivenga to give the Blue Hens an early two-run lead.
Delaware added another run in the top of the second as Gabby Klecko legged out an infield single, stole second, and scored on a single up the middle by Danielle Wissinger. Carly Adams ignited the rally with an RBI double, and she then scored when Megan Baltzell followed with a double of her own. Sciacca than added a run-scoring single, while a bases loaded walk to Hedrick increased the Lancers’ advantage to 7-3. Justina Augustine then bounced out to second, driving home Katie Shinrock to cap Longwood’s scoring.
The Blue Hens got a run back in the sixth as Klecko singled to left and eventually scored on a fielder’s choice, but Delaware would not get closer.
