NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware baseball team’s long-awaited “home opener” will take place this weekend when the Blue Hens host Colonial Athletic Association foe Northeastern for a three-game series and unveil the beautiful new renovations that are taking place at Bob Hannah Stadium.

The Blue Hens will host the Huskies for a three-game set at Bob Hannah Stadium beginning with a single game on Friday, Apr. 4 at 3 p.m. and following with games on Saturday, Apr. 5 at 1 p.m. and Sunday, Apr. 6 at 1 p.m. Admission to all Delaware baseball games is free.

“This is a very exciting time to finally be playing in our newly-renovated Bob Hannah Stadium,” said Delaware head coach Jim Sherman. “It’s such a beautiful facility and we are very proud of it. Our guys are really excited. You could feel the tempo today at practice. This is a very important CAA rivalry this weekend with Northeastern. It’s a series we truly need to win.”

Among the extensive renovations to Bob Hannah Stadium are a new synthetic turf playing surface, spacious new home and visiting dugouts that span 70 feet down the sides of the field, a new scoreboard in right field, improved and expanded home and visiting bullpens, a three-tunnel batting cage, new stadium fencing, including a 20-foot high left field wall, and backstop that will give fans improved sightlines, and increased storage space throughout the facility.

Although the field is ready for play, renovations outside the playing surface will continue through the spring. The renovations will make Bob Hannah Stadium one of the premier baseball facilities in the Colonial Athletic Association and the East.

The official dedication ceremony will take place on Sunday, Apr. 27, when the Blue Hens play host to CAA rival UNCW.

The brutal winter weather delayed renovations to the stadium and forced Delaware to play its first 14 home games this spring at Harford County Community College in Bel Air, Md.

The Blue Hens (11-14, 0-2 CAA) will be looking to capture their first league win of the year as they ride the momentum of a 12-4 victory over Temple in the opening round of the Liberty Bell Classic on Tuesday. Northeastern (13-12, 2-1 CAA) enters the weekend as one of the league’s hottest teams, having won six of its last eight games, including two wins over CAA newcomers College of Charleston last weekend.

Delaware pitcher Dan Gatto (3-4, 3.75 ERA) is scheduled to face Nick Berger (1-3, 4.12 ERA) in Friday’s opener. On Saturday, UD’s Brandon Hinkle (3-1, 6.03 ERA) will face Chris Carmain (4-2, 1.15 ERA) while on Sunday,  Delaware’s Chad Martin (3-2, 4.84 ERA) goes up against Dustin Hunt (3-0, 2.67 ERA).
