NEWARK, Del.  --   A new track surface and a new stadium name will be just two of the highlights Saturday when the University of Delaware hosts the annual Delaware Outdoor Track & Field Open at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.

Delaware will host nearly 500 athletes from 30 men’s and women’s intercollegiate and club teams when the event gets underway on Saturday, Apr. 12. The field events will start at 10:30 a.m. with track events beginning at 12 noon. Admission to the event is free.

Previously known as Delaware Mini-Stadium, the facility was renamed the Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium earlier this year in recognition of the $1.5 million leadership donation from UD Trustee Stuart Grant and his wife, Suzanne. This history-making gift was the largest single donation made by an individual or couple in support of a UD Athletics facility project.

The track events will be held on a brand new eight-lane, high performance, all-weather track surface. The 400-meter Beynon Sports blue embedded track surface was installed during the fall. Improvements were also made to the long jump and high jump areas.

“We are really excited to return home and compete this weekend,” said Delaware head coach Wendy McFarlane. “It has been exciting to practice in this beautiful new facility and take advantage of all the great improvements that have been made. We are looking for some fast times and great performances on Saturday.”

The field events will include the pole vault, long jump, triple jump, high jump, javelin, hammer, shot put, and discus while the 14 track events will include the 100 meters, 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, 1,500 meters, 3,000 meters, 5,000 meters, 100/110 meter hurdles, 400 meter intermediate hurdles, 3,000 meter steeplechase, 4 x 100 meter relay, and 4 x 400 meter relay. A special alumni 4 x 100 meter relay race will also take place.

Intercollegiate teams scheduled to compete are Delaware, Delaware State, ASA College, Community College of Philadelphia, Franklin & Marshall, Harcum Junior College, Monroe College, Rosemont College, Towson, Valley Forge Military Academy, and Villanova.

Club teams scheduled to appear are the Adidas Garden State Track Club, Ballistic Response Athletics, CPTC New Balance, Delaware Track Club, Greater Philadelphia Track Club, High Speed Track, ISAA, Javelin USA, Moore Elite Track Club, Philly Masters, Potomac Valley Track Club, Shore Athletic Club, The Professionals, TNT International Race Club, Towson University Track Club, UD Alumni, and Villanova Club Running.

Over 50 University of Delaware track & field alumni will be in attendance - including several meet competitors - and gather for an event at the Bob Carpenter Center from 5-7 p.m. followed by an reception at Klondike Kate’s Restaurant on Main Street. Free t-shirts and posters will be given to the first 50 alumni present at the meet.

Also, to add to the festivities of the day, the UD women’s outdoor track & field team will be conducting an athletic shoe drive for the More Foundation Group. The team is requesting fans to donate gently-used shoes for the less fortunate
