University of Delaware Attackman Tom Holland Named Colonial Athletic Association Men's Lacrosse Co-Player of the Week
Holland, a landscape horticulture major from Baltimore, Md. (Calvert Hall High School), scored a career-high five goals in the win over UMass as Delaware improved to 7-8, captured its first league win of the season, and garnered the fourth and final playoff spot.
The Blue Hens will take on No. 13 ranked and top-seed Hofstra (10-4) in the semifinals this Wednesday, Apr. 30, at 7 p.m. at Shuart Stadium in Hempstead, N.Y. Should Delaware win that game, the Hens would advance to the CAA title game Saturday afternoon and travel to the winner of Wednesday’s other semifinal game between No. 2 seed Drexel and No. 3 seed Towson. The CAA champion earns an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.
Holland picked a good time to deliver the best game of his Delaware career Friday as he netted a game and career-high five goals on just nine shots and also scooped up two groundballs. He had entered the game with just 11 total goals all season.
He scored Delaware’s first goal of the game to help the Hens jump out to a 6-0 lead and later scored three goals in the final 21 minutes of action as Delaware pulled away after the Minutemen had moved to within 9-6 late in the third quarter. Holland’s final goal was a highlight reel score as he tallied on a no-look behind the back shot.
Holland became the third Blue Hen player to earn CAA weekly honors this spring after goalkeeper Conor Peaks was named CAA Player of the Week on March 3 and attackman Logan Aunon was named Rookie of the Week on March 10.
Penn State’s Mike Sutton shared CAA Player of the Week honors with Holland and also earned CAA Rookie of the Week accolades.
