Donate to UD Athletics

NEWARK, Del. -- The annual University of Delaware Athletics Thank-A-Thon was a success yet again this spring as over 250 student-athletes from each of the 21 Blue Hen athletics team took part in the event at the Bob Carpenter Center recently.

During the weeks of May 2 and May 9, over 1,500 phone calls were made during the evening and over 1,000 personal letters were written and mailed by UD student-athletes to supporters thanking them for their donations.

"This event is certainly one of the highlights of the year because we have the opportunity to thank our generous donors and get to do so on such a personal level," said Delaware Interim Director of Athletics Dr. Matt Robinson. "The contributions by our donors and supporters help provide an outstanding experience for our student-athletes and the entire Blue Hen athletics program. The Thank-A-Thon is a great opportunity for those athletes to personally thank the people who have invested in them and made this unique experience possible."

The Thank-A-Thon continues to be a successful event as Blue Hen donors appreciate hearing directly from the student-athletes they support. The goal of the Thank-A-Thon is to reach out and genuinely thank alumni, parents, and friends who contribute to Delaware Athletics and help meet the annual needs of varsity teams in a personal way.

Additionally, the event helps create a culture of gratitude and philanthropy among Blue Hen student-athletes that will serve them well as future Delaware alumni.

“It was great to see how many people contribute to our program and to personally thank and acknowledge them for helping to make our experience that much better,” said Carson Scott, a junior history major and defender on the UD men’s lacrosse team from Berwyn, Pa. “There is so much that goes into our program. I know we have a proud group of alumni and donors and we wouldn’t be able to do the things we do without them.”

“The Thank-A-Thon is a great initiative as it allows us – student-athletes, coaches, programs and athletic department – to share our sincere thanks with our Blue Hen friends and fans contributing to the success and development opportunities of our current student-athletes,” said Rolf van de Kerkhof, head coach of the three-time defending Colonial Athletic Association champion UD field hockey team. “It also allows us to further educate our current student-athletes that one day the Blue Hens are counting on them paying it forward and on welcoming their support, donations, and investment in the student-athletes that will follow them.”

Van de Kerkhof noted that one night last week while he was working in his office at 6:30 p.m., a call came in from just a few doors away thanking him for his donation.

“During our conversation I thanked her – one of my current players – for reaching out to me, but I also shared that it is my hope that years from now she will receive a phone call from a field hockey student-athlete thanking her for her contributions while she was at UD.”
