APALACHIN, N.Y. -- The University of Delaware men’s golf team sits in fifth place after posting a 284 score during Sunday’s opening round of the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational hosted by Binghamton University.

Drexel leads the 16-team field with a 277 score, followed by the host Bearcats and Towson at 279, Lafayette at 282, and the Blue Hens.

UD junior Kieran Purcell shot a sizzling four under par 68, tied for the lowest round of his career, on the par 72, 7,104-yard Links at Hiawatha Landing course to end the day tied for fifth place. Classmate Jack Gianniny is tied for 19th place after his two under par 70, while fellow junior Blaine Lafferty shot an even par 72 to finish the round in a tie for 27th place.

Blue Hen sophomore Mark Benevento is tied for 45th place with a two over par 74, while senior Marc Oliveri carded a four over par 76 and sits in 64th place. Sophomore Bobby Diforio, playing as an individual, is tied for 52nd place with a three over par 75.

Adam Mistretta of Drexel is the individual leader with a seven under par 65, while three players are two shots back.

The final round of the tournament will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday.
