NEWARK, Del. -- The University of Delaware dropped its home opener Sunday, falling to Rider 4-3 at Bob Hannah Stadium in the opening day of the Bob Hannah Invitational.

“We’re 2-6, but we’re playing ok baseball,” Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. “We’ve gotten four really good pitching performances in losses, and just not gotten any offense which is surprising because we thought our strength was going to be offense. I know it’s going to be there at some point, we’re just slow out of the gate. So that’s another wasted effort out of Walter and Marinaccio. We just have to be better at the plate. Today there were some routine plays that we didn’t make out there that hurt us. We’re not swinging the bats well enough right now to overcome those mistakes."

Entering the final inning trailing by a run, the Blue Hens (2-6) received a lead off walk from Calvin Scott and a clutch pinch-hit single by freshman Andrew Reich to put runners on first and second with one out.

After Kevin Mohollen bunted the runners to second and third, senior catcher Nick Tierno popped up to the left fielder.

The Broncs (3-4) then intentionally walked Jordan Glover (at left) to load the bases for senior designated hitter Doug Trimble, who smoked a line drive that Rider third baseman Christian Estevez was able to snare for the final out of the ballgame.

On the mound, the Blue Hens received another great start from ace Brandon Walter. Walter pitched seven and two-thirds innings, allowing just one earned run recording seven strikeouts in the process.

Offensively, the Blue Hens received a two-run triple from Scott in the second inning and an RBI single from Trimble in the fifth.

The Blue Hens return to the diamond Monday morning when they will place Rider again (11 a.m.) before closing the day with a game against Delaware State (2:30 p.m.).

In the opening game of the Bob Hannah Invitational Sunday, the Broncs defeated Delaware State 4-2.

Delaware junior captain Nick Spadafino is projected to face off with Rider's Harrison McClure in the opener Monday while UD lefty Kevin Milley will oppose Delaware State's Garrett Lawson in the finale of the Bob Hannah Invitational.

“Looking ahead to tomorrow we just need to continue to get good pitching and we have to play better situational defense. I thought at the end we almost had a walk off hit. Dougie hit a screamer right down the line that was just right at the kid. We need to do a better job of coming through with runners in scoring position,” Sherman added.

· Mohollen has reached base in all eight games this season
· Walter has now thrown at least six innings in 12 of his last 15 starts.
· Ron Marinaccio stuck out one batter in 1.1 innings of work and has not allowed a run in his last four innings. He has allowed just one run in five appearances this season.
· Trimble stole his fifth base of the year, when he and Glover double stole in the fifth
· Jeremy Ake produced his second multiple hit game this season.
· Tierno has now thrown out four base runners in his five starts behind the plate.
