WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- Blue Hen freshman righthander Kat Morris tossed a four-hit shutout in the nightcap as the University of Delaware softball team split its final non-conference doubleheader of the season at Monmouth on Wednesday afternoon.

Monmouth (21-28) recorded an 8-6 comeback win during the opener, before Delaware (21-27) posted a 1-0 shutout in the nightcap.

Morris, who improved to 2-6 on the year, fired her first career shutout as a Blue Hen by scattering just four hits and two walks while striking out a pair. Monmouth pitcher Megan Stauffer dropped to 2-1 despite allowing just one unearned run on four hits in a complete game effort.

The game remained scoreless until the top of the sixth inning, as Mattie Nuccio led off with a single up the middle and one out later advanced to third when Anna Steinmetz reached on an error. Alyshia Dellatore then laced a single to rightfield, driving home Nuccio with the only run of the contest. Morris allowed a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth and a one-out double in the seventh, but worked out of trouble each time to seal the victory.

Delaware took the early lead during the opener by plating a run in the top of the first inning when Nuccio singled up the middle and scored on a single to left by Dellatore. Monmouth pulled even in the bottom of the second on an RBI double by Amanda Riley, but Steinmetz and Jordan Cargile delivered run-scoring singles before Morgan Schroll worked a bases loaded walk to give the Blue Hens a 4-1 advantage in the top of the third.

Mariah Kondravy tripled in the top of the fourth before scoring on a Steinmetz single, while Dellatore scored on a wild pitch later in the frame to increase Delaware's lead to five. However the Hawks countered with two runs in the bottom of the fourth, before they added five runs in the decisive sixth inning to go in front. Jasmine Higa singled home the first run of the frame, and after an RBI double by Katie Baron, Justene Reyes singled home two more and Rachel Shotzbarger drove home the final run of the rally with an infield single.

Nuccio finished 3 for 4 with a pair of runs scored for the Blue Hens, while Steinmetz, Dellatore and Devon Steiner added two hits apiece. Cargile, who surrendered seven runs in five innings in the circle, dropped to 15-14 on the year.

Delaware closes out its regular season this weekend with a three-game home series against UNCW. The teams are currently scheduled to play a 3 p.m. doubleheader on Friday and a 12 noon single game on Saturday at the UD Softball Stadium.
