RALEIGH, N.C. -- The University of Delaware dropped its baseball series opener at North Carolina State Friday night by a 7-1 score. The Blue Hens managed just one run and seven hits on the way to their third straight setback.

The Blue Hens (24-19) scored their lone run of the evening in the fourth inning on a bases loaded walk drawn by catcher Brian Mayer. Mayer walked twice and recorded a single in the loss.

"Tonight we just ran into some really good pitching," Delaware head coach Jim Sherman said. "We had bases loaded twice but couldn't find the big hit. We pitched pretty well, but we didn't get the support from our bats."

Delaware starter Nick Spadafino started off strong Friday night as the righty did not allow a run through the first two innings.

In the third, Spadafino allowed a solo home run to Wolfpack second baseman Will Wilson. After the Hens tied the game on the walk in the fourth, Spadafino allowed a pair of runs in the bottom half of the frame.

North Carolina State, which won its sixth straight game, maintained the 3-1 lead until the bottom of sixth when the ‘Pack struck for three runs thanks to a pair of Delaware errors. NC State then added a run in the eight inning to run the margin to 7-1.

Despite the loss, Blue Hen outfielder Calvin Scott extended his hitting streak to 13 games.

The Blue Hens and Wolfpack (26-20) return to the diamond Saturday evening for a 6:30 p.m. contest. Delaware righty Ron Marinaccio will be opposed by NC State's Michael Bienlien on the mound.
