HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware softball team dropped an 11-3 decision in five innings to UNCW on Wednesday afternoon at JMU's Veterans Memorial Park in the opening game of the Colonial Athletic Association Championship.

The fifth-seeded Blue Hens, who dropped to 24-28 on the year, will play the loser of the upcoming Hofstra-Charleston game at 6:30 p.m. in an elimination game. No. 4 seed UNCW, which improved to 32-16-1, will take on top-seeded James Madison at 4:30 p.m.

UNCW opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as Kelsey Bryan led off with a single to center, and after moving to second on a sacrifice bunt, she came around to score when Rachel Willis lined a double into rightcenter. One out later Hannah Adamczyk reached on an error by UD second baseman Mattie Nuccio, allowing Willis to cross the plate and give the Seahawks the early two-run lead.

The Blue Hens got on the board in the top of the third inning when Mariah Kondravy reached on a bloop double to left and scored when Anna Steinmetz delivered an RBI single to rightcenter.

However UNCW immediately answered in the bottom half by plating four runs to take a 6-1 advantage. The Seahawks loaded the bases on two bunt singles and a hit batter, while UD starter Jordan Cargile then walked in a pair of runs. Taylor Curran then replaced Cargile in the circle and retired the first two batters she faced, but Dominique Travers followed with a single down the leftfield line to drive home two runs and put the Seahawks up five.

Lauren Moore then doubled with one out in the bottom of the fourth before scoring on a Willis single to increase the margin to 7-1.

The Blue Hens rallied in the top of the fifth as Giovanna Kolofer led off with a walk, moved to third on a double by Kondravy, and scored when Steinmetz lined a single to left. Alyshia Dellatore then walked to load the bases, and one out later Nuccio hit a sacrifice fly to left to chase home Kondravy.

But UNCW countered with four runs in the bottom of the frame off UD pitcher Kat Morris to end the game due to the mercy rule. Merritt Wilkinson scored the first run on a throwing error, before RBI singles by Bryan, Moore and Willis sealed the victory.

Seahawks pitcher Sarah Davis improved to 14-5 after allowing three runs on seven hits in a complete game victory, while Cargile dropped to 17-15 as she gave up six runs (five earned) in two-plus innings in the circle.

Kondarvy and Steinmetz each had two hits for the Blue Hens, with Steinmetz driving home two and Kondravy scoring twice. Kondravy has now hit safely in 14 consecutive games, one shy of the school record, and has tied the UD single season mark with 19 doubles.
