HARRISONBURG, Va. -- The University of Delaware softball team was shutout by the College of Charleston, 5-0, Wednesday night in a Colonial Athletic Association Championship elimination game at JMU's Veterans Memorial Park.

The fifth-seeded Blue Hens, who fell to UNCW, 11-3, earlier in the day, end their 2017 season with a 24-29 record. The Cougars improve to 33-22 and will take on UNCW in another elimination game Thursday afternoon.

Charleston opened the scoring during the bottom of the first inning, as two runners crossed the plate when Jordin Jones reached on a squeeze bunt. The Cougars added a run the following frame  as Dana Horgan doubled, moved to third on a bunt single by Taylor DuPree, and crossed the plate when Blue Hens second baseman Mattie Nuccio dropped the throw to first by catcher Anna Steinmetz.

Delaware loaded the bases in the top of the third after singles by Leanna Gearhart and Giovanna Kolofer and a walk to Alyshia Dellatore, but Devon Steiner lined out to rightfield as Charleston pitcher Sydney Shipley escaped the jam. The Blue Hens put two runners on base in the fifth, but Dellatore's deep flyball into the gap in leftcenter was run down by Cougars centerfielder Madi Brown.

Gearhart made a terrific diving stop and a throw home to gun down a Cougars runner at the plate in the bottom half of the frame, but Kelly Sinclair then laced a two-run single to center as Charleston increased its lead to 5-0.

Delaware had a final chance in the top of the seventh as Gearhart led off with a single and Mariah Kondravy worked a one-out walk, but Shipley then retired Anna Steinmetz on a flyout to left and struck out Dellatore to end the game.

Shipley improved to 9-6 for the Cougars after firing a seven-hit shutout, while Blue Hen pitcher Taylor Curran dropped to 5-8 as she gave up five runs (three earned) in six innings of work during her final UD game.

Gearhart led the Blue Hen attack by finishing 3 for 4 at the plate, while Kolofer added two hits.

• Gearhart posted her fourth three-hit game of the season
• Kondravy had her 14-game hitting streak snapped, one shy of the school record
