NEWARK,  Del.  -- A total of 142 current and recent Blue Hen student-athletes were among the undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students who were honored Saturday morning as part of the University of Delaware's 168th annual Commencement ceremony at Delaware Stadium.

A capacity crowd of family and friends was on hand to witness the conferring of undergraduate, master's, and doctorate degrees to nearly 5,000 UD students at the 22,000-seat stadium.

First-year University of Delaware President Dr. Dennis Assanis presided over the ceremonies and former Delaware Governor Jack Markell served as the commencement speaker.

Among Assanis' remarks were congratulations to the NCAA national championship field hockey team, the Colonial Athletic Association champion men's soccer and women's golf teams, and the UD baseball squad that is competing in the CAA championship game Saturday afternoon.

"It was great to see not just myself but the other student-athletes reach a goal they set out to reach today," said Delaware men's basketball student-athlete Barnett Harris (below right), who earned his degree in political science and psychology. "This is an accomplishment that makes our families proud. We all earned a degree from a great University. This is the ultimate goal to get to the next level and get to the next chapter of my life. Being a student-athlete helped me a tremendous amount. Time management, discipline, and the ability to adjust under tough circumstances were things that we all learned in sports that translated to the classroom. All that helped in getting to this day. I am very thankful."

A total of 15 UD current and former student-athletes earned advanced degrees, including Lindsay Prettyman (cross country/track & field; doctor of physical therapy); Laura Askin (women's swimming; master of public administration); Anthony DiSanzo (men's lacrosse; master of science in fashion studies); Patrick Callaway (football; master of business administration); Steve DeLargy (men's lacrosse; master of business administration); Pat Devlin (football; master of business administration); Jalen Randolph (football; master of business administration); Will Stephenson (football; master of business administration); Alexa Swann (volleyball; master of business administration); David Tinsley (football; master of business administration); Denny LaMachia (women's tennis; master of science in finance); Brittney Noons (softball; master of education); Hannah Scholes (rowing; master of civil engineering); Ben Sampson (men's soccer; master of science in electrical and computer engineering); Tyler Barbarich (men's lacrosse; master of science in exercise science).
