MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The University of Delaware volleyball team fell to sixth-ranked Penn State in three sets and UT Martin in four sets as the Blue Hens concluded action at the season-opening WVU Invitational on Saturday.

Penn State (2-0) took the morning match by set scores of 25-15, 25-16, 25-10, before the Skyhawks (1-2) posted an 18-25, 25-19, 25-18, 25-19 victory during the afternoon.

Junior setter Abby Skryd handed out 16 assists and tied for the team lead with four digs during the Blue Hens’ (0-3) contest with Penn State, while Maria Bellinger also posted four digs to go with a team-leading eight kills.

Bailey Pearlman contributed five kills during the match, while Kori Rasmussen and Courtnie Roberts each recorded three digs.

Simone Lee slammed a match-best 11 kills for the Nittany Lions, while Haleigh Washington added 10 on just 12 swings for an .833 hitting percentage.

Delaware pulled even twice early in each of the opening two sets, but could never take a lead against Penn State.

Bellinger led the Blue Hens in kills for the third straight match by blasting 17 vs. UT Martin and Corey Perkins added 12, one shy of her career-high, while hitting .385 on the afternoon. Skryd dished out 44 assists to go with eight digs, while Maddie Judge led all players with 13 digs.

Jemima Idemudia notched 13 kills while Megan Fair and Macy Reigelsperger added 10 apiece for UT Martin, which posted a .327 attack percentage.

Delaware led for nearly the entire first set, before a kill by Skryd gave the Blue Hens the early lead. However the Skyhawks controlled the second frame, before a key seven-point run gave UT Martin the third set. UD trailed by just a point at 19-18 in a tight fourth set, but the Skyhawks took the next five points to pull away.

Head Coach Sara Matthews:
“This weekend was good for our team for a lot of reasons. Obviously the results are not what we wanted, but we learned a lot about our team and what we need to work on. We know our effort level has to be better for the duration of a match and not just in moments. I told the team this is a process and we just have to keep working hard everyday to get better, have higher expectations of ourselves and our teammates, and continue to trust where we are going.”
