NEWARK, Del.The University of Delaware women’s soccer squad dropped its Colonial Athletic Association opener 2-0 to Hofstra Thursday night at Stuart and Suzanne Grant Stadium.

Rhian Cleverly scored first for the Pride (4-3-2, 1-0 CAA) 39 minutes in off a free kick from 25 yards away. Hofstra doubled its lead in the 62nd minute when Jenn Buoncore forced a Blue Hens turnover and buried a shot.

The Blue Hens (3-5-2, 0-1 CAA) registered eight shots with Riley Dixon and Jillian Vassallo each tallying a pair.

Hofstra goalkeepers Abby Wilson and Jenna Borreson each recorded two saves for the match while Kailyn Rekos recorded two saves for the Blue Hens.

Delaware returns to CAA play Sunday at Towson. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

Head Coach Mike Barroqueiro:
“Tonight was really disappointing. I thought we were better in possession and  I thought we played well. Again we get through a first half where we had a lot of the ball, but a bad play led to their first goal. On the goal, we didn’t defend properly, and then we just weren’t tuned in on a set-piece. After that happens you have to chase the game. I’m not surprised we gave up the second goal because sometimes that happens when you have to chase the game. Overall, we were better than we have been, I just thought we had moments where forgot about the details. The one thing we didn’t do was fight. Hofstra is a team that knows how to fight and win possession. We didn’t compete on that enough. Heading into Sunday we need to fight. If we do that we can be 1-1 through two CAA matches.”
