WILMINGTON, N.C. – The University of Delaware volleyball team fought off four match points and earned one of its own, but the Blue Hens could not seal the victory as UNCW edged Delaware in a five-set thriller Friday night at Hanover Hall.

The Seahawks (7-10, 1-4 CAA) snapped a four-match losing skid by taking the match by set scores of 25-12, 24-26, 25-16, 18-25, 18-16. The Blue Hens (3-12, 1-4 CAA) dropped their fourth contest in a row.

Maria Bellinger again led the UD offensive attack by tying her career-high with 28 kills, while she added 12 digs to post her fourth double-double of the year. Daria Robinson tied her season-best with 12 kills on the night, while Raven Luckett contributed seven without an attack error.

Courtnie Roberts handed out 28 assists, Abby Skryd recorded a double-double with 24 assists and 14 digs, and Maddie Judge led all players 28 digs.

Four players reached double figures kills in a balanced UNCW effort, with Michaela White dishing out 39 assists.

After the Seahawks easily took the opening set, the second frame was tied 24-24 before kills by Bellinger and Robinson brought the Blue Hens even. UNCW handily won the third set, but Delaware closed the fourth with a 14-5 spurt to force the deciding stanza.

UD led 10-8 in the fifth set, and after the Seahawks countered with six consecutive points, Delaware fought off four match points before a Bellinger kill put the Hens up 15-14. However UNCW took the next two points, and following another Bellinger kill, the Seahawks captured the final two points to pull out the win.

HEAD COACH SARA MATTHEWS
“We had some really great individual performances tonight but have to put it together on the team front. Daria (Robinson) did a great job turning things around after a slow start. Raven (Luckett) was great tonight as well; we need to continue to have production like that out of our middles. Maddie (Judge) was really good defensively - 28 digs is good stuff. And Maria (Bellinger) as always showed up with 28 kills. Our focus is turning these great individual performances into great team performances."
