LYNCHBURG, Va. – The University of Delaware softball team opened action at the Liberty Classic on Friday by falling to 12th-ranked Baylor, 15-5, and the host Flames, 13-5, in a pair of six-inning contests.

In the Blue Hens’ first game of the day, Baylor (15-3) took control early by scoring four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Ashley Marchand delivered a two-run single in the frame, while Nicky Dawson added an RBI single of her own. Marchand and Hannah Thompson hit back to back homers in the bottom of the third for the Bears, while Goose McGlaun added a three-run shot in the fourth to make it 9-0.

Delaware (3-12) rallied in the top of the fifth, as Leanna Gearhart and Anna Steinmetz each singled home a run during a three-run inning. After Baylor answered with a run in the bottom half, Gearhart singled home two more in the top of the sixth to cut the deficit to 10-5. However the Bears put the game away with five runs in the bottom of the frame, including a walkoff grand slam by Shelby Friudenberg.

Chayanna Gallardo singled home Giovanna Kolofer in the top of the second to give the Blue Hens the early lead vs. Liberty (16-6), and after the Flames countered with a pair in the bottom half, Steinmetz clubbed a two-run homer in the top of the third to put Delaware back on top.

However Liberty answered with four runs in the bottom of third and five more in the fourth to take an 11-3 advantage. Autumn Bishop had a two-run double in the third for the Flames, while Amber Bishop singled home a pair in the fourth.

Mariah Kondravy belted a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to pull the Blue Hens within six, but Liberty answered with single runs in the fifth and sixth to seal the victory.

Steinmetz increased her school-record home run total to 30, while Kondravy now has 28
• Steinmetz (4) and Kondravy (3) have accounted for all seven of UD’s homers this year
• The Blue Hens are now 0-25 vs. ranked opponents in school history
• UD faced Baylor for the first time in school history, and fell to 2-3 all-time vs. Liberty
