LYNCHBURG, Va. – The University of Delaware softball team dropped a 5-3 heartbreaker to 12th-ranked Baylor before falling to Ohio University, 8-0 in six innings, Saturday at the Liberty Classic.

Delaware (3-14) jumped in front of Baylor during its first game of the day as Mattie Nuccio doubled and scored on a double by Chayanna Gallardo. Anna Steinmetz drilled a solo home run in the bottom of the third, while Reyna de Jesus singled home Leanna Gearhart in the fifth to make it a three-run game.

Blue Hen pitcher Sarah Piening fired six scoreless innings, but the Bears (16-3) rallied in their last at bat by pushing across five runs. Goose McGlaun opened the frame with a homer, and one out later Taylor Ellis singled home a run to bring Baylor within one. Caitlin Charlton hit a sacrifice fly to even the contest, before RBI hits by Nicky Dawson and Jessie Scroggins put the Bears on top.

In Delaware’s second game of the day, Ohio University (9-8) took control early when Michaela Dorsey drilled a three-run homer in the bottom of the first. MacKenzie Brunswick added a two-run shot as the Bobcats tacked on four in the fifth, before an RBI double by Dorsey in the sixth ended the contest.
