NEWARK, Del. – Sarah Piening fired a three-hit shutout in the Blue Hens’ 2-0 win over Cornell before Mariah Kondravy belted a walkoff grand slam in the 6-2 victory over Villanova as the University of Delaware softball team picked up a pair of wins Sunday afternoon at the Blue Hen Invitational.

In the first game of the day, Piening (left) scattered just three hits and one walk while earning her fourth victory of the season, including her first shutout. Delaware (6-16) scored both runs in the top of the third inning, as Leanna Gearhart led off with a triple and scored one out later on a single by Reyna de Jesus (below). Following a single by Anna Steinmetz, de Jesus crossed the plate when Kondravy singled to rightfield.

Piening would do the rest, allowing just one Cornell (5-8) hit the rest of the way, a leadoff double by Megan Murray in the top of the sixth.

Villanova (9-10) then took the early lead in the final game of the day, as Natalia Segovia hit a bases loaded sacrifice fly in the top of the first and Brittany Husk delivered an RBI double in the second.

Delaware was held scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, when Sarah Bessel doubled and came around to score when Mattie Nuccio laid down a bunt single and Wildcats pitcher Taylor Rhinehart threw wildly to first base. The Blue Hens were down to their final out in the seventh, but Ali Davis lined a clutch double to leftcenter, chasing home Giovanna Kolofer with the tying run.

After Jordan Cargile escaped a jam in the top of the eighth, Delaware quickly loaded the bases in the bottom half before Kondravy blasted a pitch over the fence in leftcenter, setting off the Blue Hen celebration.

• Kondravy hit her 29th career home run, and is now tied for second place in UD history with 205 hits
• de Jesus recorded two hits in both games
• Gearhart, Nuccio and Davis each had a hit in both contests
• Davis’ seventh inning RBI was her first of the season
• Cargile picked up her first win of the year vs. Villanova with three hitless innings of relief
• Villanova edged Cornell, 3-2, in the first game of the day
