HARRISONBURG, Va. – Each week, the twitter account for the University of Delaware women’s tennis team posts a core value for the program.

One of them is perseverance and that’s exactly what the Blue Hens displayed on Sunday against one of the toughest teams in the CAA.

Delaware kept battling a red-hot JMU team, but ultimately fell just short in a 5-2 loss in Harrisonburg.

“There were many highlights from today’s match against a very talented JMU team,” head coach Laura Travis said. “Sara [Komer] and Brooke [Pilkington] played outstanding in doubles. Sarah [Hall] and Sarah [Whited] came back from an 0-4 deficit in doubles and nearly pulled it off. Both Hall and Komer executed with patience, poise and smart shot selection in doubles. It really picked up everyone else’s level of play.”

Junior Sara Komer and sophomore Brooke Pilkington got things started on the doubles side with a decisive 6-1 win at the top doubles spot. The Blue Hens nearly took the point when Sarah Hall and Sarah Whited battled back from 0-4 and nearly pulled off the win, but dropped a tough 7-5 decision at #2 as JMU grabbed the doubles point.

Komer evened things up with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the second singles spot, but the Dukes battled through the lineup to pick up four consecutive singles victories.

Hall grabbed the final point of the day for Delaware with a 7-5, 6-2 victory at #5 singles.

The Blue Hens return home this Tuesday, March 20th to take on Cal State Northridge. The match is set for 2 p.m. at the Delaware Field House Outdoor Courts. Weather pending, if the match is moved indoors, it will be played at 11:30 a.m. at the Elkton Indoor Courts.
