DURHAM, N.C. – Delaware wrapped a stretch of eight straight road matches Thursday with a 4-3 come-from-behind victory at North Carolina Central.
Tied at 1-1 in doubles play, the Blue Hens (12-5) clinched the team point with an exciting 7-6 (5) top-flight decision by junior Blaise Casselbury (Lititz, Pa./Lancaster Country Day School) and senior Colin Wong (Shah Alam Selangor, Malaysia/SMK Kota Kemuning).
Delaware fell behind in singles action, but pulled out wins in the third, fifth and sixth flights to pick up its 12th win of the season.
Wong topped Sebastian Bromley, 7-5, 6-1 in the third spot while freshman Justice Jones (Laurel, Md./JTCC School) posted his fourth consecutive and 10th overall victory by defeating Brooks Campbell, 6-2, 6-0, in the fifth slot.
In the sixth flight, freshman Guilherme Valdoleiros (Marco de Canaveses, Portugal) bounced back from a first-set loss to tally the 2-6, 7-5, 6-3 win over Pablo Juez Torres.
Head Coach Pablo Montana
“This was a good win for us today. We came out aggressive at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Colin came out with some big poaches to take us to a tiebreaker while Blaise was solid on returns and first volleys. In singles, we started out slow going down 3-1, but then Colin and Justice won their matches convincingly. Gui showed tremendous mental toughness as he won the deciding point for the third time this spring. Hats off to N.C. Central as they battled to the end and this match could have gone either way.”
