BETHPAGE, N.Y. – The Pride came out strong and the Blue Hens were unable to respond Friday afternoon as Delaware fell to Hofstra, 5-2, at Sportime Tennis Center.
The team doubles point came down to the very last set as HU (9-6, 1-1 CAA) pulled out the win in a tiebreaker in the top flight.
In No. 4 singles action, freshman Justice Jones (Laurel, Md./JTCC School) logged his fifth straight win by topping Jan Leithner, 6-4, 6-3.
Classmate Guilherme Valdoleiros (Marco de Canaveses, Portugal) also posted a victory on the day for Delaware (12-6, 0-2 CAA), his ninth of the season, with the 6-1, 6-4 decision over Santiago Haas.
Head Coach Pablo Montana
“Although we competed and gave it our best, we did not play well today. This is a match we should win, but I give credit to Hofstra for staying loose and hitting their shots.  Nathan [Benyowitz] and Laurenz [Lankes] continue to give us a good boost with their doubles play and they are both playing with a high level of confidence. In singles, Hofstra came out of the gates smoking and put us in a tight spot after winning the first sets on four out of the five matches. Congrats to Justice [Jones] and Gui [Valdoleiros] for pulling out singles wins today.”
