NEWARK, Del. – Blue Hen freshman third baseman Sarah Bessel lined an RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning as the University of Delaware softball team defeated the College of Charleston, 3-2, Sunday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium.

The Blue Hens (11-30, 3-12 CAA) and Cougars (27-21, 6-9 CAA) were knotted at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Alyshia Dellatore laced a line drive off the leftfield fence with one away. One out later Bessel dropped a single into leftcenter, chasing home Dellatore to put Delaware in front for good.

UD pitcher Jordan Cargile then retired Charleston in order during the top of the seventh, as leftfielder Giovanna Kolofer made a diving catch on a sinking line drive to end the game.

The Blue Hens took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Anna Steinmetz ripped a single up the middle to drive home Leanna Gearhart. Delaware maintained its one-run lead until the top of the fifth, when Taylor DuPree singled to centerfield to bring the Cougars even.

Kolofer led off the bottom of the fifth with an infield single and scored two outs later on another RBI single by Steinmetz. Charleston answered in the top of the sixth on a squeeze bunt by Taylor Belfiore, before Bessel’s RBI single in the bottom half put the Blue Hens back in front for good.

• Cargile earned her fourth win in the circle after allowing two runs on six hits in a complete game effort
• Kolofer, Steinmetz and Dellatore each had two hits on the day for the Blue Hens
• Bessel and Chayanna Gallardo both added one hit for UD
• Steinmetz increased her team-leading RBI total to 31
