CHARLESTON, S.C. -- The University of Delaware baseball team dropped its series finale Sunday afternoon, falling 3-2 to The College of Charleston in 11 innings at Patriots Point.

The Blue Hens (22-20, 7-8 CAA) enjoyed a 2-0 lead heading to the Charleston (30-15, 12-6 CAA) half of the sixth.  In the sixth, freshman Chris Ludman looked to have rung up Luke Morgan to end the frame, but a close pitch was ruled ball four.

The next Cougars batter doubled home a pair of runs tying the game at 2.

Delaware had its opportunities to score the go-ahead run, including in the ninth, when the Hens had Tyler Callender on third with less than two-outs, but Charleston was able to coax a pair of groundouts.

The game remained 2-2 until the 11th when a one-out hit batter placed the winning on for Charleston. The Cougars won the game two batters later on a double off the right field wall.

In total, Ludman pitched six innings allowing just the two-out runs in his final frame. He struck out a career-best six. Lefty Colman Vila continued his strong senior campaign, firing another 3.2 scoreless innings. He struck another five batters.

In the loss, Kevin Mohollen went 2-5 with a double and two runs scored, while freshman Zack Miller turned in a similar 2-5 with a double.

Delaware returns to action Tuesday afternoon at Saint Joseph's. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.

Head coach Jim Sherman:

"This game was a bit frustrating because again, we received extremely strong pitching, first from our starter [Ludman] and from our bullpen [Villa and Meeker]. We really were right in two of the three games this weekend, but just couldn't find the big hit. We've been down offensively all season and it's really showing up in CAA play. Overall, I thought we pitched well this weekend, allowing just five hits on Friday and six hits today. We still have three really important conference series, two of which are at home, where we've played well this year. This team just needs to keep battling so hopefully we can control our own playoff destiny down the stretch."
