Delaware Women’s Swimming Tops George Mason, 161-139; Blue Hen Men Edged 163.5-136.5

 NEWARK,  Del.  – Led by freshman Annie Nunes,  the University of Delaware women’s swimming and diving team won its second consecutive dual meet as the Blue Hens topped George Mason, 161-139 Saturday afternoon in a non-league meet at Rawstrom Natatorium.

The Delaware men (1-1), despite three wins from sophomore Sihan Liu, dropped a close decision to George Mason, falling 163-.5-136.5.

The Delaware women were led by Nunes, who tallied four first place finishes on the afternoon to lead the Blue Hens (2-0). Nunes was the second leg of the 200 medley relay team that finished first with a time of 1:46.19. She also earned three individual top finishes, winning the 100 breaststroke (1:05.67), 200 breaststroke (2:22.34), and 200 individual medley  (2:08.88).

The other three legs of the Blue Hen 200 medley relay team that earned a first place finish were Alyssa Sanders, Tori Gillespie and Morgan Whyte. Whyte earned an individual top finish in the 50 freestyle (22.86).

"Our women pulled off a nice win by coming from behind and winning the last three meets," said Delaware head coach John Hayman. "Annie won four events and put in some impressive times for this early in the season. "Our men had some consistent swims today but got touched our in four events which cost us the meet."

Also capturing first place finishes for the Blue Hens were sophomore diver Kristina Congdon in both the  1-meter (258.60) and 3-meter (260.80) events; Dominique Montoya in the 100 freestyle (53.11); and the 400 freestyle relay team of Laura Askin, Mary Kay Harris, Maggie Tracy, and Montoya (3:33.18).

The Blue Hen men were led by Liu, who took home three first place finishes. Liu served as the last leg of the 200 medley relay team that earned a top finish (1:35.12). Liu’s teammates in the 200 medley relay were Tim Ware, Alex Tooley, and Cole Clark. Liu also finished first in the 50 freestyle (21.95) and 100 freestyle (47.60) events. Tooley also posted three second place finishes in the 100 breaststroke (1:00.67), 200 breaststroke (2:11.46), and 200 individual medley (1:55.94).

Ware earned one more first place finish in the 100 backstroke event with a time of (51.77) while Clark finished first in the 100 butterfly (51.61).

The Blue Hens will take off a weekend before returning to action Nov. 1-2 at the CAA Pod meet at James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. The women will compete against James Madison, William & Mary, and UNCW while the men will face William & Mary and UNCW.
