Tim Weaver, a 26-year college coaching veteran who previously served seven years as head coach at Bethany (W.V.) College, was named defensive coordinator and linebackers coach at the University of Delaware in February, 2013.
He will serve as co-defensive coordinator with defensive line coach Dennis Dottin-Carter for the third straight season in 2016.
In 2015, Weaver led a defensive unit that ranked No. 3 in the CAA in rushing defense (123.5/17th in NCAA), No. 3 in third-down conversion defense (.346/31st), No. 3 in scoring defense (20.5/22nd), and No. 5 in total defense (329.2/24th). Five Delaware defensive players earned All-CAA honors.
During the 2014 season, Delaware ranked No. 4 in the CAA in pass defense (197.2) and sixth in sacks (28). Under his tutelage, linebacker Patrick Callaway earned All-CAA notice in both 2013 and 2014.
Weaver previously served as head football coach at Bethany where he also was the school's director of athletics since 2008. His coaching career in football also includes serving as assistant coach at Columbia, Harvard, West Virginia Wesleyan, Hofstra, and Western Connecticut State.
“I’m thrilled to have Tim join our staff as defensive coordinator,” said University of Delaware head coach Dave Brock in making the announcement. “I had the opportunity to work with Tim in the past and I’ve seen first-hand that he is an exceptional teacher and a person of very high character. He will provide tremendous leadership for our defense and he will play the attacking style that I am looking for. In addition, his experience as a head coach will be useful to me as we go forward.”
“It was going to take a special place for me to leave Bethany, and the University of Delaware is that kind of place,” said Weaver, a 1990 sociology and anthropology graduate of Davidson (N.C.) College where he was a four-year starter at defensive end and linebacker. “Delaware is the recognizable brand name in FCS football, and with the success, tradition, and fan base, it really is unique. I have such respect for Delaware and I’m excited to be a part of it and to work with Coach Brock.”
Weaver began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at NCAA III Western Connecticut State in 1990-91 and moved on to coach the defensive line at Hofstra in 1992-95, served as defensive coordinator and linebacker coach at NCAA II West Virginia Wesleyan in 1996-98, served as co-defensive coordinator, defensive line coach, linebackers coach, and special teams coach at Harvard in 1999-2002, and was defensive coordinator at Columbia in 2003-05.
He took over the head coaching position at NCAA III Bethany in January, 2006 and served the seven seasons in that post. He added director of athletics duties in August, 2008.
“As someone who lived in Delaware and still follows the Blue Hen football program, I am delighted to see Tim join the staff,” said current Virginia Wesleyan President and former Bethany and Wesley (Del.) President Dr. Scott Miller. “It has been a pleasure to work with Tim over six years as both a director of athletics and football coach. He is an individual with impeccable integrity and he is committed to the student-athlete experience. His years at Davidson and Harvard have given him a unique perspective on college sports that will benefit Delaware. He is a good coach, an outstanding person, and a tremendous family man. We hate to lose him, but I’m happy for the University of Delaware.”
Weaver and his wife, Kelly, reside in the Newark area with daughters Delaney and Casey.
