NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware knocked down a season-high 10 three-pointers and got double figure scoring from three different players en route to a 72-58 victory over Monmouth Tuesday evening at the Bob Carpenter Center.

Sophomore Courtni Green (Winchester, Va.) hit a career-best five three-pointers and finished with 15 points while freshman Erika Brown (at right; Haledon, N.J.) added four three-pointers and 14 points.

Senior Kelsey Buchanan (below; South Riding, Va.) contributed 12 points and eight rebounds as the Blue Hens (3-1) picked up their second straight game.

Monmouth (0-3) got 20 points from forward Shira Shecht and a double double of 16 points and 10 rebounds from Chevannah Paalvast.

With just over 10 minutes remaining in the first half, the Hawks took a one-point lead before Delaware rattled off eight straight points to go up, 22-15.  The Blue Hens eventually took an 18-point advantage at the break at 41-23.

Monmouth opened the second half on an 11-2 run to come within six at the 14:23 mark, but UD bounced back quickly and took a 58-40 lead over the next four minutes.

In the remaining 10 minutes of the game, Delaware never led by less than 12 points en route to the 72-58 win.

POST-GAME QUOTES
Head Coach Tina Martin – “I wasn’t worried about a hangover [from Friday night], the biggest thing that I was concerned with was that defensively we have to be a solid team and get better.  We ran out to a big lead and then everybody just kind of took a sigh and we started doing things that are uncharacteristic of how we are suppose to play.  We gave them some open looks and let them come right back in to the game and as a young team, yes, we’re happy we won, but they have to learn that defense has to be our staple.  When we get later in to the season, there are no possessions that you can take off.  We let a team crawl back in to it when we had the opportunity to slam the door.”

Senior tri-captain Kelsey Buchanan – “We have people who are talented and can put the ball in the basket, so we need to look for everyone to be in double figures if possible.  That’ll force defenses to play certain people and then others will be open.  I think we’ve improved mentally over the last four games.  We’ve gotten our heads straight and have learned what the physicality of college basketball looks like, especially for some of the younger players.”

Sophomore Courtni Green – “It was very important to come out strong today.  Just because we got the win over Wake Forest doesn’t mean that we can relax.  We still have to be upbeat and play defense.  On offense, it doesn’t matter your age or grade, if you can shoot the ball, Coach wants you to shoot the ball.”

Freshman Erika Brown – “I think it’s really good when Court [Green] and I are in rhythm because the defense will think that Court is the shooter and then I’ll knock them down and then they think I’m the shooter.  Now we’re both hitting threes and the other team is confused and don’t know what to do.  I come in every game, play hard and try to contribute as much as I can for my team to win.”
