University of Delaware Softball Falls To Mercer, 7-0, Defeats Lehigh, 2-1, On First Day of Citrus Classic
ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Delaware softball team dropped its first game of the day to Mercer, 7-0, before rebounding with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Lehigh as the Blue Hens split a pair of games on Friday at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic held at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.
Delaware, which is now 2-5 on the season, scored its only two runs of the afternoon during the top of the first inning against the Mountain Hawks. Jessica Grisler led off with a double to the fence in centerfield, while walks to Michelle McKinnon and Sarah Bencivenga loaded the bases with nobody out.
Lehigh had runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the third when Morgan Decker legged out a bunt single, while MacKenzie Velasquez scored when the throw to first by UD pitcher Carolyn Szymanski was off the mark and rolled into rightfield.
The Mountain Hawks had two runners on base in the bottom of the sixth inning, but Szymanski struck out pinch hitter Vicky Lattanzio to escape the jam. Lehigh then loaded the bases in the seventh with two outs, before Szymanski struck out Mountain Hawks designated player Emily Bausher swinging on a full count pitch to end the game.
Szymanski (at right) allowed five hits and struck out six during the complete game effort to earn her second win of the season.
Due to her outstanding performance, Szymanski was named the Evoshield Player of the Game.
Delaware finished with four hits during the victory including two by Grisler, a double from Shelby Jones and a single by McKinnon.
The Blue Hens are back in action on Saturday at the Citrus Classic when they take on Marshall at 11 a.m. and No. 17 Georgia at 3:30 p.m.
