ORLANDO, Fla. -- The University of Delaware softball team fell to East Carolina, 9-1, before dropping a 2-1 verdict to Northern Illinois as the Blue Hens concluded action at the Diamond 9 Citrus Classic on Sunday at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex.

The Pirates (7-4) jumped ahead during the top of the first inning as Chelsea Kaluhiokalani-Glackin led off with a double and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Kristi Oshiro, while East Carolina added another run in the second on an RBI triple by Meredith Mitchell.

Alex Fieldhouse singled home a run in the top of the third inning, before Jordan Lewis blasted a two-run homer to put the Pirates in front, 5-0. Abby Cline then took over for Kiersten Coffman in the circle for Delaware but she immediately walked Casey Alcorn, who stole second and third before scoring on a wild pitch.

East Carolina tacked on an unearned run in the sixth frame, before an RBI double by Lewis and a run-scoring single by Alex Mycek in the seventh closed out the scoring for the Pirates.

The Blue Hens avoided the shutout during the bottom of the seventh as Heather Oakley doubled to left field and eventually crossed the plate when Shelby Jones was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Oakley finished with two hits during the contest, while Tori Conrad added a single for UD.

Delaware (2-8) bounced back during its second game of the day by scoring a run during the bottom of the first inning against Northern Illinois. Jessica Grisler led off with a single to center, while she quickly moved to second when Danielle Wissinger reached on an error. Two outs later Wissinger crossed the plate when Lisa Stacevicz reached on an error, giving the Blue Hens the early lead.

UD starting pitcher Kelly Lupton fired four scoreless innings as Delaware maintained its one-run advantage, until the Huskies pushed across a pair of runs in the top of the fifth off Carolyn Szymanski. Jordyn Bowen led off with a single to left, and she immediately scored when Kali Kossakowski followed with a triple to right-center. Pinch hitter Rebecca Rupard then legged out a bunt single, allowing Kossakowski to cross the plate with the game-winning run.

The Blue Hens looked to answer in the bottom half when Wissinger and Sarah Bencivenga each singled with two outs, but Huskies pitcher Skylar Weinstein got Oakley to fly out to end the threat.

Weinstein earned the complete game victory for Northern Illinois by allowing one unearned run on six hits, while Szymanski took the loss for Delaware.

The Blue Hens will be back in action next weekend when they play five games at the Norfolk State Spartan Classic.
