NEWARK, Del. -- The Blue Hen softball team dropped a pair of contests Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Delaware Spring Invitational, falling to Robert Morris, 5-1, and Cornell, 5-3, at the UD Softball Stadium.

Delaware, which is now 7-12 on the season, opened the scoring against the Colonials when Shelby Jones led off the top of the third with a single and eventually scored on a single to center by Jessica Grisler. However Robert Morris struck back in the bottom half, pushing across four runs to take the lead for good.

Cassie Show ignited the rally with a leadoff double to left, and she crossed the plate on a bunt by Chelsea Evans. Samantha Santillo then drilled an RBI single to left, while Evans later scored on a double steal attempt to make it a 3-1 game. Tess Apke then doubled and came around to score on a single by Haileigh Stocks to cap the inning.

The Colonials (13-8) tacked on an insurance run in the fifth when Evans led off with a single and scored on a throwing error by UD third baseman Giovanna Kolofer.

Blue Hen starting pitcher Kiersten Coffman took the loss and fell to 1-2 after she allowed three earned runs on four hits in two-plus innings of work. Jones went 3 for 3 at the plate for Delaware, including a triple. Nicole Sleith improved to 8-3 for Robert Morris by giving up just one run on five hits while posting 10 strikeouts.

During the Blue Hens’ second game of the day, Cornell (4-6) jumped in front by putting up four runs in the top of the second. Sophie Giaquinto knocked home the first run with a sacrifice fly, while Chloe Pendergast then scored on a bunt by JJ Briggs. With two outs Meg Parker laced a bases loaded single up the middle, driving home a pair to give the Big Red a four-run cushion.

Delaware immediately answered during the bottom half, as Kolofer reached on an error and came around to score on a single down the leftfield line by Gabby Klecko. Grisler then delivered a single to chase home Klecko and make it a 4-2 game.

Cornell added a run in the third on an RBI single by Emily Weinberg, before Sarah Bencivenga doubled and scored on a single to left by Kolofer to again bring the Blue Hens within two. However neither team would score during the final four innings, as the Big Red held on for the victory.

Blue Hen starter Taylor Curran dropped her first decision of the year after allowing five earned runs in 2.2 innings of work, before Carolyn Szymanski fired 4.1 innings of scoreless relief. Cornell pitcher Sammy Roth was charged with just one earned run on eight hits in a complete game effort while moving to 2-2 on the year.

Grisler, Danielle Wissinger and Bencivenga each had two hits to pace the Delaware offense.

The Blue Hens conclude play at the UD Spring Invitational on Sunday when they face Villanova at 3:45 p.m.
