Fast Start Doesn't Hold Up as Blue Hens Fall to Towson 11-8 in CAA Men's Lacrosse Battle
TOWSON, Md. -- The University of Delaware burst out to an early 5-0 lead and maintained a four-goal advantage at halftime, but the lead wouldn't hold up as host Towson rallied in the second half to down the Blue Hens 11-8 in Colonial Athletic Association men's lacrosse action Saturday night at Johnny Unitas Stadium.
Delaware led 8-4 at the break and was still tied heading into the final stanza, but Towson scored three times in the last period to post the victory. The Blue Hens took a share of the lead into the second half for the second straight game but could not pull out the victory after falling to CAA foe Hofstra 11-9 last Saturday.
The Blue Hens (5-4, 0-2 CAA) dropped their second straight game after winning four straight earlier this season. Redshirt freshman Steve DeLargy led the Hens in scoring for the second straight game with two goals and an assist while Jeff Heath scored twice and Dan Keane and Brian Kormondy each added a goal and an assist.
Towson (7-2, 1-0 CAA) outscored the Hens 7-0 in the second half to win its sixth straight game and down the Hens for the third straight year. Greg Cuccinello had two goals and two assists, Ryan Drenner scored twice and dished out one assist, Ben McCarty tallied twice, and Justin Mabus had a goal and dished out a game-high four assists.
The Tigers held a commanding 41-20 advantage in shots, but put only 15 on goal as UD goalkeeper Conor Peaks stopped four shots. Towson also held a 27-21 edge in groundballs and had five less turnovers than the Blue Hens (12-7).
Delaware did hold the advantage in faceoffs as Tyler Barbarich, who entered the game ranked No. 4 in the nation in winning percentage, won 13 of 21 draws and picked up seven groundballs.
The Hens roared out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter as Kormondy scored the game’s first goal just over three minutes in and Heath and DeLargy each tallied twice in the first nine minutes of play. Towson followed with two straight goals, but the Hens answered back on goals from Keane and Tom Holland to up the lead to 7-2.
Towson inched closer with goals by Drenner and Cuccinello, but the Hens took a strong 8-4 lead into the second half on a goal by Beau Jones with 1:18 remaining before the break. Unfortunately, that would be the Blue Hens’ final goal of the game.
The Tigers dominated the second half as they outscored the Hens 7-0 to earn the win. Joe Seider, McCarthy, and Cuccinello scored for Towson in the third period and Max Siskind tallied a man-up goal with 1:54 left in that stanza to knot the score at 8-8. Towson then took the lead for good when McCarty scored unassisted just under five minutes into the final stanza. Goals by Devin Grimaldi and Drenner in the final 7:40 secured the victory as Delaware managed just two shots over the final 15 minutes.
Delaware will continue CAA play this Saturday when the Blue Hens return home to face Drexel at 1 p.m. at Delaware Stadium in CAA action.
