NEWARK, Del. -- College of Charleston shortstop Lizzy Vaughn delivered a two-run single with two outs in the top of the seventh inning as the Cougars came back to post a 3-2 victory over the University of Delaware softball team Sunday afternoon at the UD Softball Stadium in the rubber match of the three-game CAA weekend series.

The Cougars, who improved to 20-11 overall and 2-1 in league play, trailed by a run heading into the final frame. But after Blue Hen pitcher Kelly Lupton retired the first batter of the inning, Kelsey Hodgson reached on an error by UD shortstop Sarah Bencivenga before Allison Pedigo looped a single to right. Delaware was one out from victory following a groundout by Katie Padilla but Vaughn then ripped a single to right, driving home both runners to put CofC on top.

Delaware, which dropped to 8-15 overall and 1-2 in the CAA, attempted to rally in the bottom of the seventh when pinch hitter Lisa Stacevicz lined a one-out single to left. But Samantha Martin then took over in the circle for the Cougars, and she got Jessica Grisler to fly out to center before striking out Danielle Wissinger to end the game.

Martin earned her first save of the season, while CofC starter Hope Klicker improved to 10-9 after she allowed two earned runs on six hits in 6.1 innings of work. Lupton was the hard luck loser for the Blue Hens, as she dropped to 3-4 despite allowing just one unearned run on seven hits.

Delaware took the early lead in the bottom of the first inning when Grisler led off with a single to center and scored one out later on a triple into the gap in rightcenter by Giovanna Kolofer.

The Cougars quickly drew even in the top of the second as Becca Mueller led off with a triple to left and immediately scored when Chandler Frisbie followed with an RBI single to left.

The Blue Hens went right back ahead during the bottom half when Grisler lofted a sacrifice fly to left to drive home pinch runner Morgan Schroll, and Delaware maintained its one-run lead until the Cougars’ comeback in the seventh.

Szymanski went 2 for 3 at the plate for Delaware, while Grisler and Kolofer each added a hit and an RBI.

Delaware remains home on Wednesday to host Coppin State in a 3 p.m. non-league doubleheader at the UD Softball Stadium.
