SWARTHMORE, Pa.   --  University of Delaware junior Melissa Mazzo was the top performer for the Blue Hen women’s outdoor track & field team Monday afternoon as she placed third overall with a record time in the 3,000 meter steeplechase event at the Swarthmore College Last Chance Meet.

Mazzo was one of three Delaware runners to compete Monday and was joined by Emily Gispert in the 1,500 meters and Alyssa Kennedy in the 5,000 meters.

Mazzo, who placed sixth in the event at the Colonial Athletic Association championships last week, set a school record in the steeplechase as she finished with a time of 11:10.10 to place third overall and break the mark of 11:12.67 set by Kayla Koonz during the 2013 season. Hope Rainey of Haverford won the event with a time of 10:48.21.

Kennedy also placed third on Monday as she ran the 5,000 meters in a time of 17:23.48. The race was won by Jill Prentice of Richmond who put in a time of 17:02.69. Kennedy placed ninth in the 5,000 meters at the CAA championships.

Gispert, who placed fourth at the CAA meet in the 1,500 meters, was ninth overall Monday at Swarthmore as she finished with a time of 4:31.10. Ajee Wilson of the Juventus Track Club, won the race in a time of 4:12.10.

Delaware, which captured the Colonial Athletic Association team title last week, will continue action this weekend at the Eastern College Athletic Conference Championships at Princeton University. Nearly 20 members of the squad have qualified for the regional event and will compete on May 16-18.
