Karen Freed, who has spent the last 14 years working in collegiate athletics and recreation administration, was selected as the University of Delaware’s new associate director of athletics for recreation services in October, 2017.

Freed, who replaces Jake Olkkola, who left Delaware in July, 2017 to become director of athletics  at Colby College, will oversee a vibrant UD Recreation Services program that services the entire student body and focuses on student wellness, leadership development, and healthy engagement.

Among its features are the Carpenter Sports Building, four fitness centers for students and staff use, various upgraded playing fields and courts, 38 club sport teams, and over 30 intramural leagues and tournaments.

She began her tenure at Delaware on Oct. 9 and reports to Senior Associate AD for Health, Well-Being, and Sport Performance Eric Laudano.

“Karen’s experience working in our model of Athletics and Recreation Services coupled with her leadership skills and area expertise, were the ideal skills and leadership qualities we were looking for to lead UD Recreation Services,” said Laudano.

Before arriving at Delaware, Freed spent the last four years as assistant director of athletics and recreation services and senior women administrator at Rutgers University-Camden.

While at Rutgers-Camden, Freed provided leadership for an NCAA Division III athletics program featuring 19 sports and over 300 student-athletes. She managed all aspects of the Athletic & Fitness Center, a 75,000 square foot facility, including major purchases of fitness equipment, maintenance needs, and project management.

Prior to Rutgers-Camden, she was the director of athletics and student leadership at Salem (N.J.) Community College from 2009-13 and spent four years at NCAA Division II Molloy (N.Y.) College where she served as both assistant and associate director of athletics, was interim director of athletics for one season, and was the senior women administrator in 2003-07.

"I am excited to join the athletics and recreation services staff at the University of Delaware,” said Freed. “I am looking forward to working with the recreation team to continue developing a recreation program that enhances the UD experience for students and the campus community."

Freed, a native of Pennsville, N.J., earned her undergraduate degree in sports communications (2001) and her master’s degree in sports administration (2002) from Mississippi State. While at MSU she served as an athletic marketing graduate assistant for one season.

She has served on numerous athletics committees during her tenure and is a member of Women Leaders in College Sports and the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA) Leaders in Collegiate Recreation.

Freed and her husband, Mark, are parents to son, Landon, and daughter, Adley.
