NEWARK, Del. -- Ten University athletes-including alumni, coaches and administrators-- who have contributed to the University's impressive athletic heritage were honored during an induction ceremony Nov. 7, 1997, in the Bob Carpenter Center. The event formally welcomed the distinguished honorees into the University's new Athletics Hall of Fame.

The honor was established to salute outstanding athletes, coaches and administrators who have contributed to UD's athletic tradition of excellence.

According to Buck Thompson, a member of the University's Board of Trustees Visiting Committee on Athletics, who welcomed those in attendance, "We are here to recognize our athletes who have reached the highest level of achievement in their sport and to recognize those coaches and benefactors whose contributions to the University's athletic programs have been outstanding.

"Three years ago at a meeting of the Visiting Committee on Athletics, a motion was made to begin the planning and implementation of a University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame. Much effort has gone into the creation of this Hall of Fame, and we owe a debt of gratitude to Edgar Johnson, our athletic director, and to his staff for the work they have done to make this night possible and to see that it continues for the future. My sincere congratulations to each and every one who is to be honored at this inaugural induction. It is indeed an illustrious group."

The inductees were selected by a nine-person committee, chaired by Johnson and including UD athletics staff, head coaches, alumni and Board of Trustees members.

President David P. Roselle told the honorees and their guests, "In the truest sense today, while we are singling out 10 individuals to honor for their unique contributions to Delaware, we also are celebrating the tradition and heritage so much a part of UD athletics. The University is known and respected for its commitment to scholastic excellence in combination with athletic performance-a winning combination for Delaware."

Edgar Johnson, athletics, said, "We are very proud of the athletics heritage, and this Hall of Fame forever honors those who have brought prestige to the University of Delaware.

"It's important that we remember those who have preceded us in building our great athletics tradition. Selecting the first class was a formidable task with so many deserving candidates."

The inductees also were recognized before the Nov. 8 football game against the University of Connecticut at Delaware Stadium. Plaques were awarded to the inductees at the ceremony and also will be permanently displayed on the MBNA America Concourse of the Bob Carpenter Center.
