NEWARK, Del. -- A group of six men and four women, including two former Blue Hen standout athletes who have gone on to successful coaching careers at their alma mater and three who had ties to track and field, make up the 2001 class of the University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame announced Monday.

The fifth class of the UD Athletics Hall of Fame brings to 43 the total number of former UD athletes, coaches, and friends who have been honored. The Class of 2001 will be inducted into the hall of fame in a ceremony Nov. 9 at the Bob Carpenter Center and will be recognized at the Delaware vs. Richmond football game Nov. 10 at Delaware Stadium.

The Class of 2001 includes 1930's three-sport standout Edwin W. Ed Thompson; 1940's track and field and basketball standout William L. Bill Gerow; all-time great football linebacker Darrell L. Booker; track and field and cross country standout Carl-Olaf Homen; field hockey All-American and current UD coach Carol A. Miller; lacrosse and field hockey All-American Natalie R. Nari (Bush) Brickley; former all-time women's basketball leading scorer Lori G. Howard; four-time conference tennis champion and current UD head coach Laura A. (LeRoy) Travis; noted historian and longtime Delaware Stadium public address announcer Elbert Chance; and All-American golfer Oscar L. Mestre.

"We are honored to induct yet another star-studded field into the University of Delaware Athletics Hall of Fame", said UD Director of Athletics Edgar N. Johnson. It's a diverse class as we honor six men and four women with ties to 12 different sports and many different eras. They truly represent some of the most talented and dedicated people associated with Blue Hen athletics.
