University of Delaware Freshman Carolyn Szymanski Named CAA Softball Rookie of the Week
RICHMOND, Va. -- University of Delaware freshman Carolyn Szymanski was honored as the Colonial Athletic Association Softball Rookie of the Week on Tuesday after leading the Blue Hens to three victories last weekend at the Norfolk State Spartan Classic.
Szymanski, a native of Middletown, Del. (Caravel HS), batted .625 during the Blue Hens’ four games at the tournament, leading the team with eight RBI while tying for the lead with two doubles and two home runs.
Szymanski drilled a three-run homer, the first of her career, during Saturday’s 9-4 comeback victory over Monmouth. She then added a solo homer, doubled home two more runs, and fired a five-inning no-hitter in the 8-0 triumph over the Hawks on Sunday. She walked just one batter and hit another while striking out nine, picking up her third victory of the season. Szymanski’s no-hitter was the 15th in school history, and the first by a Blue Hen since Lindsay Jones against Lehigh on Mar. 22, 2006.
Szymanski added two more hits, including a go-ahead two-run double in the top of the fourth inning, as the Blue Hens closed out the weekend with a 3-2 win over Norfolk State.
Szymanski leads Delaware with three victories in the circle, and also ranks third on the squad with a .333 batting average. Her eight RBI is the most on the team, while she has added eight hits and three runs scored.
Delaware, which is 5-9 this season and currently riding a three-game winning streak, returns to action this weekend at the Coppin State Tournament in Baltimore, Md.
